This is all the more likely and admissable as the two lines

will probably be joined at Canton so as to allow of through traffic

between Hong Kong and Hankow.

For this reason, I have allowed very high Working Expenses

per mile as compared with other Railways. I have no figures for

a similarly situated Railway and therefore cannot bring forward

any actual example to check my estimate of actual cost of running

and can only base my calculations on a comparatively high unit

cost per mile compared with longer Railways.

-

ESTIMATE OF TRAFFIC

Now to begin with the passenger traffic to and fCanton.

As far as I can find out from the figures at ry disposal, the

fares paid by the 4500 (2250 each way) passengers are as followB8-

7% or

315 pay 1/50 for the trip = $ 472. 30% or 1350 1/20

W

63% or 2835 # /35 #

= $1620.

= $992.

making a total of $3084 as the daily receipts or say roughly $3000

per day of which the British Section would get $500 as its share

if receipts were divided by mileage.

For ordinary passenger traffic in China, I think four classes

will be necessary. The 4th. class being to accommodate the

coolis who pays only 35 cents on the steamer and has to find room

for himself where evre he can.

+

The cost of running a passenger depends on the number that

can be crowded into a carriage. Taking an ordinary carriage

60 ft. long.

It should carry say 50 first class, 75 second,

100 third and 120 fourth class at a cost respectively of 1, *75,

+

*50 and 45 cents per mile if every carriage were full. The fact

+

that the first class carriages are seldom if ever fall generally

makes the carriage of first class passengers of no profit to the

Railway.
